Laws of Motion at ZONAMACO 2019
Stand Laws of Motion — 01.jpg

As every year, the second week of February marked the beginning of Art Week Mexico City. With different events happening around town, we took part in one of the most important ones during this week: ZONAMACO, the leading contemporary art and design fair in Latin America, has been known for showcasing work by the most prominent artists and galleries from around the world. The design section, carefully curated by Cecilia León de la Barra, presented the latest creations by the most important designers in the scene and their collaborations with renowned Mexican companies, as ours with Breuer.

Laws of Motion is Joel’s first collectible design series for Breuer, in which through different typologies like mirrors, tables and seats, the collection articulates flawless production execution on behalf of the company and the level of introspection achieved by Joel Escalona. At first, this collection aims to explore concrete concepts such as gravity, force or movement, and how they can be expressed as design pieces, which at first glance seem static, but hide a second unexpected personal meaning.

This year the fair had around 60,000 visitors, but if you were not one of the lucky attendants, here is a look of what happened during the most important event for art and design in Mexico City.

Joel Escalona for Montblanc
MONTBLANC X JOEL ESCALONA — Product in use — 01.jpg

When a great idea begins to materialize, it usually does so on paper, that's where the possibilities become infinite.

For the designer Joel Escalona, is hand is an extension of his mind, and the tool he uses to sketch is like a magic wand that allows him to create and design what in the world of ideas he expects to be discovered.

BALANCE BY JOEL ESCALONA — Illustration Detail — 16.jpg

It is not fortuitous that Joel uses a Montblanc M to capture his wit on paper. His weight, the finesse of his stroke and the accuracy of the instrument have become infallible for the designer obsessed with details.

Montblanc did not overlook the choice of Joel and together they launched a global campaign to celebrate high-end design, the one that chooses the materials of the highest quality and in which the precision of the manufacture reminds us of the watch industry. It is the first time that the German firm collaborates with a Mexican designer.

The collection of Personal Editions, Balance, was the chosen one to give channel to the campaign. Balance was presented for the first time at the 16th edition of ZONAMACO, the most important Contemporary Art and Design fair in Latin America. Along with the 10 pieces of limited edition, the sketches showing the first strokes of a collection that, on tour around the world, has aroused the interest of curators and collectors, were also exhibited. The original sketches, made on paper with the Montblanc M that faithfully accompanies Joel in his creative process, were also put on sale.

Joel Escalona and Montblanc not only share the value for design and commitment for the impact it has on people, now they are also accomplices of a story that seeks to seduce the most demanding consumer from the first stroke.

This new collection reinterprets the character of the Mexican fiesta. Taking the ephemeral manufacture of “toritos” and “castillos” as the starting point, they use design as means of exploration to emphasize the broadest aspects of this practice.
